Land beyond Antarctica is now up for grabs after NASA's recent admission about the shape of the Earth. An expecition of 9 US Naval vessels has been sent to chart the lands previously thought to not exist. "It was an honest mistake," said the NASA director in a statement on Wednesday. "We were just too embarrassed to admit we were wrong for so many years." The President will give a statement later this evening.
Climate experts are now concerned that that the ice walls are melting at an accelerated pace. Despite profound recent warming, the Earth is currently in an 'icewall phase' in its long-term geological history. Even after a century of global warming and many glaciers shrinking or disappearing, conditions are still cold enough to support a permanent ice wall around our oceans. This has not always been the case, and experts are now worried we may be reaching a tipping point.
"The ice likely first formed around 2 million years ago, during the Pleistocene era"
New theories have emerged for what the Earth may have looked like in it's distant past. One new study seeks to address this uncertainty by collecting samples of ice fragments from the wall. Areas which sit above the surface of the ocean may provide insight that can be used to help understand how the structure first appeared around our world.
